How a flight school can run a radio program with Tower Drill
Every flight school already has a radio program. At most schools it is informal, unwritten, and different for every instructor: one CFI teaches the four W's on a whiteboard, another coaches calls in the run-up area, a third quietly keys the mic for students until short final. The result is the most common complaint examiners and tower controllers have about student pilots: radio work that lags the flying by months. This post is a playbook for making the program deliberate, using structured spoken practice on the ground so airplane time goes to flying. We wrote it around Tower Drill because that is our app, but the structure works with any tool that makes students speak out loud and scores what they say.
The principle: radio work is homework, not Hobbs time
Radio communication is one of the few checkride-relevant skills that requires zero airplane time to develop. It is a language skill: it improves with spoken repetition against a voice that answers, and it barely improves at all through silent reading or through coaching shouted over an intercom at 900 feet. A school that moves radio work onto the ground gets the same student to solo with fewer prompted calls, and gives back five to ten minutes of every dual lesson to actual flying. Map assignments to your syllabus stages
The assignments work best when they are keyed to stages, not left as "use the app." A mapping that fits a typical Part 61 or 141 private syllabus:
Pre-solo: phonetic alphabet and numbers, the four W's of initial contact, basic readbacks, ATIS, taxi calls with hold-short discipline, and pattern calls. Cross-country phase: flight following, frequency changes, airspace transitions, and calls at unfamiliar towered and non-towered fields. Students switch their practice airport to each planned destination, so the first call to an unfamiliar tower happens on the couch, not ten miles out.
Checkride prep: the ACS Readiness view shows practice coverage across the radio skills behind common ACS tasks, and the eight-call Radio Checkride runs the whole flight unprompted with no hints. It is a practice estimate, not an endorsement or a prediction, but it surfaces gaps while there is still time to close them cheaply.
Standardize across instructors
The quiet benefit for a school is consistency. When every student drills the same phraseology and the same readback structure, stage checks stop relitigating "my CFI says it this way." The app's calls follow standard AIM phraseology and score the items that matter operationally: full hold-short readbacks, runway assignments, frequencies, and callsign discipline. Instructors keep teaching judgment and local procedure; the repetitive pattern drilling happens between lessons, identically for everyone. Agree as a staff on which lessons gate which stage, write it into the syllabus, and the program survives instructor turnover.
Verify the reps happened
Homework only works if it is visible. Tower Drill's Radio Skills report is a one-page summary a student can export and hand to their instructor: per-category accuracy, totals, and trends. Version 2.0 adds Tape Review, which keeps recent transcripts and recordings on the student's device, so a debrief can start from what the student actually said rather than what they remember saying. A practical rhythm: assign specific lessons at the end of each flight, ask for the skills report at the start of the next ground session, and spend two minutes on the misses. Students learn quickly that the assignment is real.
Fold it into ground school
Two additions cost almost nothing. First, a fifteen-minute radio segment in each ground-school block: play a Listen & Shadow exchange on the classroom speaker, have students shadow the readback out loud together, then discuss what had to be read back verbatim and why. Second, an incursion-avoidance session built around the Taxi Trainer and your own field's FAA diagram: students assemble taxi readbacks in order, then trace the route and hotspots on the chart. Both exercises make the quietest students speak, which is precisely the point.
What it costs a program
